French police arrest boss of breast implant company

PARIS: French police on Thursday arrested Jean-Claude Mas, the founder of the company's breast pip implant that sparked an international health scare by using substandard silicone, as part of a murder probe.

"Jean-Claude Mas was arrested at 7:00 am and taken into custody" orders of an investigating judge, prosecutor Jacques Marseille Dallest told AFP.

He said arrests were made in connection with a murder investigation opened by prosecutors in the southern port city of Marseille in December and that more can be held in custody for up to 48 hours.

A police source said that More was arrested at the home of his colleagues in the south of France.

Dallest said police are carrying out a search of the house of his colleagues, the town of Six Fours, for evidence in the case.

Prosecutors said police had also arrested Claude Couty, another former executive at the now-dead stud Prothese Poly (pip), in southern France.

More attorneys, Yves Haddad, said his 72-year-old client: "He is not fixed, he is tired and he was waiting for her doctor."

Pip was shut down and its products banned in 2010 after it was revealed using industrial-grade silicone gel caused abnormally high rates of rupture.

Fears over its spread globally implants late last year after French health authorities have advised their 30,000 women pip implants removed because of the increased risk of rupture.

Between 400,000 and 500,000 women worldwide are believed to have received implants pip. An unknown proportion are made with sub-standard gel which is durable, once the third-largest manufacturer of silicone implant in the world, used to pick up the costs.

Germany and the Czech Republic has followed France in recommending that the device is removed as a precaution but Britain has said it does not follow suit.

French officials also said that cancer, including 16 cases of breast cancer, was found in 20 French women with the implants, but insisted there is no proven link to disease.

In interviews, more confirmed the implants were made with a silicon gel unauthorized but rejected any suggestion that they pose a risk to health.

Philippe Courtois, a lawyer representing the women who received implants PIP, said he was encouraged by the increasingly arrest but do not expect to change his story.

"Considering the outrageous statements he made about all the victims, so we do not expect from hearing," Courtois said.

Representatives of two groups that advocate for women who received the implants appear before the investigating judge on Thursday and Friday.

Included in the investigation into the murder, the prosecutors in Marseille yet concluded an aggravated case of fraud in implant scandal that is expected to be taken to court by the end of the year.

Marseille prosecutors received over 2,500 complaints in the case, which has sparked calls for greater European regulation and monitoring of medical devices such as breast implants.
