India scored four second half goals by Walmiki (44 minutes, 53), VR Raghunath (50) and SK Uthappa (56) after Justin Reid Ross (14) gave South Africa the lead in the first half of the floodlit Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium.
The tourists, however, did not give up until the last minute and managed to reduce the margin by Ian Haley (54) and Lloyd Madsen (64).
With the win, India has taken an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series. India had earlier defeated South Africa 4-0 and 2-1 in the first two Test before the visitors scored a 1-3 victory in the third tie.
The final Test of the series will be played on Sunday.
Contrary to the results, the South Africans are by far the better side on display in the first half as the Indians found difficult to breach their strong defense.
The Proteas also played fast-paced one-touch hockey during the opening and create more space during their attack. And, as expected the visitors drew first blood when Ross Reid sound board in a reverse shot after receiving a cross from the right.
Subsequent to 0-1, the Indians came with more goals in the second period and drew parity when an opportunistic Yuvraj tapped home after he was set up Sarvanjit Singh solo run from the right side.
Pumped by the goal, India went on an offensive that resulted in their first penalty corner from which Raghunath scored with a low flick on 50 minutes to make the scoreline was 2-1 in favor of the hosts.
Three minutes later, Yuvraj doubled his tally scoring his second goal of the match after the South African goalkeeper Erasmus Pieterse Raghunath declined from the second short corner of India.
But South Africa reduced the margin in the next minute when Haley scored from a counter-attack, guiding Lloyd Norris-Jones' cross from the left past the keeper India.
To the delight of the sparse crowd present at the stadium, India restore their lead soon when young Uthappa scored from a goal-mouth melee to a 4-2 lead.
But the South Africans seemed in no mood to give as Madsen scored on a variation from the visitors fourth penalty corner six minutes from the breast.
The margin of victory might have been greater for India but ultimately Uthappa protests are not allowed on-field referee.
India coach Michael Nobbs, given the captain armband senior striker Shivendra Singh, is happy with the result but rued his wards countless missed opportunities.
"Changes are still there because we are trying around a few things in the series. But once we reduce the sets of 22 players we have some specific areas of gray. We circle the enemy penetrated 37-38 times now, but our conclusion is not that good, "Nobbs said.
"We also are not stopping fantastic but it's ok we are also guilty of not anticipating tackles outside the circle and gave South Africa chance to come into our circle," he added.
He also backed Walmiki, that looked scrappy and out-of-kind in the match but scored two goals.
"If he (Yuvraj) hit two goals rusty, I'm happy. It was only his second match after recovery from (hip) injury. He is a consistent goal-scorer when he plays," Nobbs said.
I agree that the team is still much work to do ahead of February 18 to 26 Olympic [Images] qualifiers to be played in New Delhi [Images], Nobbs said the ongoing series against South Africa was "stepping stone to where the team wants you to get into. "
He also said he continued to experiment with the team in the final match of the series.
"On Sunday we also continue to try some things. Danish (Mujtaba) and Rupinder (Pal Singh) will play the next match."
South Africa coach Gregg Clark, meanwhile, is disappointed with the result of the match but happy with the performance of his wards have improved steadily.
"We played some really good hockey (in series), but we should not conceding 4 goals in the second half. It is disappointing. We wasted some opportunities also," Clark said.
"Our penalty conversion rate was very poor throughout the series. It is something we need to return to the drawing board and work hard."
