DHAKA - Bangladesh Army said Thursday it had uncovered the plot last month about "religious fanatic" Muslim officers to overthrow elected government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
"We have exposed the heinous conspiracy to overthrow the democratic government through the army," army spokesman Brigadier General Masoud Razzaq said in a written statement.
"The company is a blank with the sincere efforts the army of soldiers," the statement said, adding that the plot was fomented by the Bangladeshi expatriate Finns to contact the "religiously fanatical army officers."
Hasina's government, which came to power in early 2009, moved in June last year to strengthen the secular nature of the Bangladesh Constitution, even though Islam was the religion of the state maintained.
Move attracted a series of angry protests by Islamic activists in Muslim-majority Bangladesh, one of the world's poorest countries, with a long history of coups and counter-coups.
Razzaq told local media that the plot involved up to 16 Islamist officers, both active and retired, raising fears about the prevalence of hard-line in the upper ranks of 140 000-strong military.
Two retired officers, including Colonel has been arrested and presented before the court of inquiry was set up 28 December, when the alleged "co-planner," called the general Syed Ziaul Haq, serving officer, is on the run.
Syed Ashraful Islam, a spokesman for the ruling Awami League party and an influential minister said, would be handed over to someone guilty of "exemplary" punishment.
"There is no room for conspiracy in the army. Those who are involved in such a conspiracy is an exemplary punishment," he said.
By providing information about the alleged plot, Razzaq said that Ziaul had circulated emails to officers serving in different detail a plan to overthrow the government is 09-10 01
Illegal Islamist group Hizbut Tahrir, banned in Bangladesh in 2009, when it joined a car bomb is a politician, was accused of help around the posts.
There are rumors online late last month about the coup attempt foiled after the country's main opposition leader Khaleda Zia accused the government of "the incidence of disappearances" in the army.
The army struck back, terming allegations, "a provocative and misleading."
Dhaka University Professor Imtiaz Ahmed, security expert, told AFP that "we have heard a rumor a possible coup in the last couple of weeks. It seems that they are handled the situation very well."
He said it was important for the armed forces, "a serious thing to dig, how many Muslims were involved in the supply of and how big was the penetration."
Bangladesh has been bloodshed and political violence after obtaining independence in 1971.
The country's first president was assassinated in his army to overthrow in 1975, and Bangladesh, was directed by a military dictator from 1982 to 1990 again.
Democracy was restored in 1991, but the battles between supporters of Zia and Hasina were the army step in once again in January 2007.
The Board of Directors Hasina, who came to power in 2009, struck a military rebellion later that year, when 57 officers died in the army renegade border guards.
Spokesman said the army has set up a research committee on 28 December to try the alleged coup planners.
