An "armed terrorist group" in Syria blew up a gas pipeline at dawn Monday, the state-run media said, as activists reported gunfire and explosions in the suburbs of Damascus as the conflict of the country moves ever closer to the capital.
Pipleline that carries gas from the central province of Homs in an area near the border with Lebanon. Sana news agency reported that the blast happened in Tal hosh, which is about five miles (eight kilometers) from Talkalakh, along the border with Lebanon.
Further details were not immediately released.
There have been few attacks since the Syrian pipeline insurgency began in mid-March, but it is clearly behind them.
President Bashar Assad regime has blamed "terrorists" for driving the 10-month-old uprising of the country, protesters seeking democratic change.
On Sunday, the Syrian army with dozens of tanks and armored vehicles stormed the rebellious areas near the capital, shelling the neighborhoods that have fallen under the control of dissidents and army clashing with fighters.
Activists and residents said at least 62 people died in violence nationwide.
The large-scale offensive Sunday proposed regime is concerned that the military defectors could close in Damascus, Assad's seat of power. Early Monday, activists reported hearing gunfire and blasts in the Damascus suburbs, but there were no details.
The mounting bloodshed has added urgency to the Arab and Western diplomatic efforts to end the 10-month conflict.
In the past two weeks, the army dissidents have become more visible near the capital, seizing several suburbs on the eastern side of Damascus and setting up checkpoints where the secret men wearing military clothing and wielding assault rifles to stop the motorists and protect the anti-regime protests.
Their presence so close to the capital is surprisingly tightly controlled in Syria and the Assad regime suggests can either lose control or set up a trap for the fighters before going on the offensive.
The revolt against Assad, started largely peaceful demonstrations, has grown increasingly militarized recently as more frustrated protesters and army defectors had taken up arms.
In a bid to stamp out resistance outside the capital, the military is responding to a withering assault on a string to the suburbs, leading to a spike in violence that killed at least 150 people since Thursday.
The United Nations says at least 5400 people died in 10 months of violence.
The UN is holding talks on a new resolution on Syria and the next week will discuss an Arab League peace plan aimed at ending the crisis. But the initiative faces two major obstacles: Damascus' refusal of the Arab plan it says impinges on his authority, and the willingness of Russia to use its UN Security Council veto to protect Syria from punishment.
