BJP backs Sangma, who seeks support of Trinamool, Sena and JD(U)

New Delhi, June 21 (PTI): The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday announced its support for formar Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma in the Presidential election against the United Progressive Alliance candidate Pranab Mukherjee.
"BJP, as the main opposition, did not want to give a walkover to Congress because there was no prior consultation by the UPA to us," BJP leader Sushma Swaraj of said.
The BJP admited to the National Democratic Alliance are divided over Sangma and has appealed to allies Shiv Sena and Janata Dal-United to revisit their position of not supporting Sangma.
Swaraj and Arun Jaitley, BJP senior leader another also said that the BJP is trying to bring the Trinamool Congress on the board but refused to show how it is to do.
After BJP announced its support for him, the 64-year-old Sangma said former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa two powerful (Tamil Nadu) and Naveen Patnaik (Odisha) has sponsored its candidates.
"I am not a candidate of any single party. My name is sponsored by two powerful chief minister of the country. I am grateful to both leaders," said Sangma.
"Not only the BJP but other allies like Akali Dal, JMM and other smaller parties to secure their support. They told me that they will stand by the decision of the NDA," he said reporters here
JD (U) and Shiv Sena took a taxi different from that of the NDA, he appealed to both parties to extend support to him.
Mamata Banerjee asked if Trinamool Congress will support him, Sangma expressed the hope that the party will stand behind him as its first choice APJ Abdul Kalam has decided not to contest.
"I am used to her earlier. He asked me to support Kalam then. But he told me that if Kalam does not contest, then he supports me. Now that Kalam is not in the race, I hope Mamata supports me. I am very very hopeful that Mamata was me, "he said.
To his daughter Agatha Sangma, Minister of State in the UPA government, will vote for him, he said as he was a mature man, he can take decisions about himself.
